iOS Tops Mobile Video Views; Android Catches Up Fast!

According to Vid.ly, a video encoding and url-shortening service, iOS commands a 52% share of mobile videos watched on their service. Android’s share has spiked significantly from 5% in Jan, 2011 to 32% in Dec, 2011. Contrastingly, iOS share shrank from 87% to 52% during the same period.

Video Engagement on Tablets + Mobile Devices Beats Desktop [Infographic]

Engagement of videos on tablets and mobile devices is much higher than Desktops, according to this Infographic compiled by Wistia. More people now view online videos on mobile devices than other devices. This one comes as no surprise, iPhone accounts for the highest amount of videos consumed, with over 71% of online video viewers watching it on their iPhones.

Online video platform, Ooyala, published their new Video Index Report, which shines the light on the state of online video every quarter. Ooyala analyzes anonymized online video consumption patterns of 100M monthly unique users, globally. Their key find states that tablet users consume 30% more video than desktops.

Mobile Video Consumption to Clock 693B Minutes by 2015: In-Stat

In-Stat’s latest report tracks the mobile video landscape and forecasts the mobile video market on a 4-year time horizon from date. Video, they claim is driving more than half of the traffic on mobile devices today. And mobile video consumption is pegged to zoom up-to 693B minutes by 2015.

Mobile Video Calling Startup Tango Raises $42M Series B; Desktop the Next Destination

Tango, a cross platform mobile video calling app, have closed a Series B round of funding to the tune of $42M. They are now adding desktop to the mix and users can video call for free between Windows PC, iOS devices and Android devices with front facing cameras. The funds would also be used to ramp up their team in China.

Nearly 80% of Web Video Publishers Encode Primarily for Apple Devices

MobilevideoEncoding.com, a web to mobile video encoding service reports that 78% of their customer-base select Apple OS devices as a default for web video to be encoded for mobile play. Only 4% of the customers particularly encode for Android devices. 18% encode for video enabled feature phones, or the 3GP format. The data is measured on their customers’ choice of preset options.

Mobile Video Consumption Spikes in the U.S, Fueled by Android + iPhone

mobile_vid_picRhythm New Media’s report on Mobile Video Advertising (Q2, 2010) finds that Mobile video consumption in the U.S would grow by 30% this year. They also find that Android device owners predominantly prefer watching video over 3G networks compared to Wi-Fi. iPhone mobile video consumption is split more or less evenly over 3G and Wi-Fi networks. ‘What Are You Watching’ Asks Tunerfish

tunerfish_screenshotComcast owned service Tunerfish, a social discovery engine for movies, TV and online video launched its iPhone app today. The app asks a simple question ‘What are you watching’ to its users. Users could check in to any video content (TV, movies, online video etc) and shout out to their friends what they are watching and could simultaneously see what their friends are viewing. This service seems like foursquare but targeted for video!

eMarketer Pegs Mobile Video Revenue Potential @ $1.34B by 2014

emarketer_logoeMarketer forecasts mobile video revenues would grow from $548M in 2010 to $1.34B by 2014. This study is relegated to the U.S market only. eMarketer also finds that the number of people watching video on their mobile devices would touch 24 million in 2010. This growth would continue at a CAGR of 23% and the population of mobile video viewers by 2014 would hit 57 million. By 2014 approximately 1/5th of the entire mobile owner population in the U.S would view video on their mobile devices.

Youtube_MobileYoutube re-launched its m.youtube.com yesterday and is stacked with new HTML5 features. The upgraded mobileweb app is niftier than the old mobile native app on smartphones. The UI is enhanced, so is the load-time and the video playback quality is superior to its predecessor. The new features on the mobileweb app produce a similar user experience as the desktop.
