IDC Ups Tablet Shipment Forecasts for 2H, 2011

Market research firm, IDC, states that global tablet shipments for the second half of 2011 would be 62.5 Million units; up from its previous estimates of 53.5 Million units. The burgeoning demand for tablets around the world has led to the re-forecast. The market showed a sequential quarter over quarter shipment growth of 88.9%, and 303.8% y-o-y.

iPad’s Market Share to Plummet Nearly 45% by 2015: Gartner

Gartner, released its latest projections on media tablet O.S market share, and forecasts that iPad would lose nearly 45% of its current share by 2015. Android and RIM’s yet to be released QNX O.S is projected to grow their share by eating into Apple’s iOS portion.

Tablet Shipments to Hit 100M in 2013

tabletAccording to Digitimes Research forecast, tablet sales could touch 100M units in 2013 and tablet shipments could outpace netbooks by the last quarter, 2010. They go onto say that smartphone shipments in 2011 could reach 440M and could surge to 800M in 2013. Notebook sales projections for 2013 stands at 300M units, according to Digitimes.

Apple Could Sell Nearly 50M iPads + 100M iPhones in 2011

AppleLogoAccording to Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair, Apple plans to produce 45-48M iPads and also forecasted to sell 100M iPhones in 2011. The projections also states that Apple could have 10% of the global handset market share next year. Apple has sold nearly 40M iPhones in fiscal 2010, a 93% increase year over year.

iPad Eating into Notebook Market? Morgan Stanley Report Indicates Cannibalization

ipadMorgan Stanley Analyst, Katy Huberty released a report to the company’s clientele that suggests ‘Tablet Cannibalization’, owing mainly to the rise of iPad that seems to have caused a deceleration in notebook sales. Retail notebook sales have been on the decline since March 2010, but in August, 2010 for the first time this year it displayed de-growth, falling by 4% year over year, according to Morgan Stanley. Huberty expects the PC market to be under pressure by iPad and a slew of tablets slated for launch in the near future.

iOS 4.2 to Get Wireless Printing

iOS-4Come November, and the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices powered by iOS 4.2 would arrive with print support. The AirPrint feature of the iOS 4.2 would enable any of the above mentioned devices to print wirelessly (via Wi-Fi) without having to install drivers or software. HP’s ePrint printers would be the first device to support this feature.

iPad to Launch in 9 New Countries

ipadApple announced that the iPad would be released in nine new countries come this Friday. The countries include Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore. Consumers here could pick up the tablet in an Apple store or an authorized retailer. As of last month iPad had sold 3 million units in 80 days. Availability in new markets means it would only escalate sales.

81% of Applications Downloaded on Apple’s App Store are Free Downloads

Apple-app-storeFree apps constitute 81% of Apple’s App Store downloads according to analyst Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray. Only 19% of apps downloaded are paid for at an average sale price of USD 1.49 (top 50 apps). Munster says that 4 billion free apps have been downloaded till date. These and the following stats are for all apps downloaded on iOS devices – iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Tablets to Overtake Netbook & Desktop Sales by 2013: Forrester

forrester-logoAt the Untethered conference, Forrester Research projected the U.S sales figures of different PC form factors – Tablets, Netbooks, Notebooks & Desktop – for the next 5 years. Tablet sales, they say would overtake netbook sales in 2 years time and Desktop sales by 2013. Tablet sales (iPad + Others) this year is pegged at 3.5 million growing to 20.4 million in 2015. Apple has sold nearly 2 million iPads so far and according to TechCrunch, it could blow past Forrester estimate all by itself in 2010.
