Cumulative App Store Revenues to Soar by 78% in 2011; Apple to Garner ¾ Share: IHS iSuppli

IHS iSuppli, released a report today that pegs the combined revenues of the four major app stores (run by Apple, Google, RIM & Nokia) to USD 3.8 Billion for 2011. Collective revenues of these app stores in 2010 stood at $2.8B, which is a 77.7% increase y-o-y. Apple is projected to claim a ‘ gargantuan 76% of the total app market revenue”, according to iSuppli.

Opera Mini 6 Returns on GetJar App Store

GetJar had offloaded Opera Mini 6 app from their store when Opera announced they would be launching a store of their own. GetJar had then cited agreement violation for the Opera app boot. But now, GetJar has allowed Opera to re-introduce their Mini 6 application on their app store.

App Downloads Growing at a Rapid Pace, iPhone Leading the Pack: ABI Research

iBeerABI Research states that app downloads have accelerated as smartphone sales surges. In 2009, an estimated 2.4B apps were downloaded across platforms and is forecasted to touch 6B by the end of this year. Spike in smartphone sales and proliferation of app stores are said to be the key demand drivers for app downloads. iPhone is expected to lead the race through the forecasted five year timeline.

Android Marketplace has the Most Amount of Free Apps

distimo-logoDistimo, the app store analytics firm reports that Google Android Market has the largest share of free apps amounting to 57% compared to other app stores during May, 2010 in the U.S. Palm App Catalogue, Apple App Store, Nokia Ovi, Blackberry App World, Windows Marketplace are the other app stores where paid apps far outweigh free apps, according to Distimo. They also note that more than half of mobile apps in most app stores barring Blackberry and Windows Marketplace are priced under USD 2.

GetJar Closes $11 Mil Series B Funding

GetjarGetJar, the second largest app store, secured an $11 Million Series B financing led by Accel Partners. The new funding would enable GetJar to strengthen its web and mobile sites and solutions aimed at application developers and publishers. The cross platform store currently offers 65K apps across operating systems such as Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile. The company serves its apps to users in 200 countries and caters to both smart and feature phones.
