38K App Count On Android Market; Google Claims Nexus One Is Profitable
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  16, April 2010

android-logo-whiteThe Android market more than doubled their app count in the last four months. In December 2009, the total number of apps available on Android market was 16K. Today it stands at 38K. This announcement was made when Google declared its financial results (revenues at a staggering 5Billion) for Q1. The company also claims that the Android run Nexus One phone is profitable too.

The rev numbers beat street expectations and something else that beat expectations was the success story of Nexus One painted by Google, when most analysts talk about the flop show of its initial roll out. Google said that they were happy with the ‘uptake’ of Nexus one so far and did not comment on whether the phone would be available in retail stores.

The momentum gained by apps on the Android market comes as no surprise, but Google still has a long long way to go to play catch up with its Cupertino rival, which has a stunning 185K apps on its app store (as on April 1st week).

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
