iPad Sells 600-700K Units on Saturday; App Store Crosses 3K Mark

ipad_salesThis two-fold report covers iPad unit sales and app count on the iPad app store. According to analyst Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray, Saturday sales of iPad ranges between 600,000 to 700,000 units. His initial forecast of 200,000-300,000 proved to be less than half of the first day tablets sold across America. In another statistic from Mobclix, a Mobile Ad Exchange, there are a total of 3122 apps and counting as on Monday morning. The paid to free apps ratio stood at 80-20.

On iPad sales, Munster noted that “It took Apple three days to sell a million iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G’s, and 74 days to sell 1m original iPhones”. Munster add that Apple has played the supply side game well with most stores reporting availability on day one. The inventory is not as ‘constrained’ as analysts had speculated and with longer than expected lines at the stores, the company has been able to fulfill demand.

With regards to the apps on the app store, paid apps totaled to 2523 and free apps amounted to 599 on Monday morning, according to Mobclix. Of the available apps, Gaming apps consumed nearly 1/3rd of the app share. The average app price is $4.99 and the Mobclix expects an average price decline if ‘iPad apps follow the same trend as paid iPhone apps’
