Samsung Outpaces Apple in Smartphone Shipments; Creates New Records
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  27, July 2012

In the second quarter of 2012, Samsung has shipped nearly twice as many as iPhones by Apple. Strategy Analytics pegs Samsung smartphone shipments to be 50.5M units in Q2, a new record in quarterly shipments by a smartphone maker. Apple shipped 26M units in the same period.

Thus Samsung’s global marketshare has shot up to 35%, with Apple grabbing 18% of the share.

Strategy Analytics states

“Samsung has been able to deliver hit models in most major price segments, from the high-end Galaxy Note phablet to the mass-market Galaxy Y. We believe Apple’s lackluster performance was driven by some Apple fans and operators holding off iPhone purchases in anticipation of a rumored new iPhone 5 model around September or October this year.”

“Volumes have polarized around those two brands (Samsung and Apple). The growth of Samsung and Apple has come partly at the expense of Nokia, whose global smartphone marketshare has halved from 15% to 7% over the past year. This is Nokia’s lowest marketshare level in the smartphone category for a decade.”

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
