iPad Users Have Downloaded 3 Billion Apps To Date: ABI Research
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  4, January 2012

ABI Research, finds that iPad users have downloaded 3 Billion apps since the launch of the original iPad in 2010. iPhone took 2 years to hit the same milestone, while iPad has outpaced the iPhone by crossing the 3B download barrier in just 18 Months. iPad now accounts to 19% of the cumulative app downloads by Apple users.

Contrastingly, iPad’s rival, Android tablets have a total of only 440M apps downloaded till date.

ABI goes onto explain why

“ In terms of hardware, the iPad device still offers much more compared to the current crop of tablets in the market; Android is currently being used on many low end tablets that do not offer experiences anywhere near the iPad and this dampens the download momentum for user”

With the release of the latest OS, the Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich, Android app downloads is pegged to escalate, estimates ABI.

At the Le Web Conference in December 2011, Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt, had alluded to the same; that in 6 months time post the ICS release, there would be more app downloads and developers would pour in more resources to develop quality apps for Android.

App analytics firm, Flurry, had recently found that Developers make 4x the revenue on iOS compared to Android. Its time Android steps up the game with ICS and provides more value to developers.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
