More Than 1 Out Of 4 Photos + Videos Now Taken on Smartphones
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  23, December 2011

NPD Group, conducted an online survey of over 3.3K U.S Internet users aged 13 years and over, and find that 27% of pics and videos are now captured on smartphones. NPD also finds that smartphones are replacing basic aim-and-shoot cameras; as there is no need to carry an additional device to capture ‘spontaneous moments’.

However, NPD states that aside from spontaneous moments, for important events, users continue to use basic to higher end cameras and camcorders.

NPD goes onto find that the volume of pics taken by smartphone surged 44% y-o-y from 17% last year to 27% this year.

Owing to the increase in image capture by smartphones, sales of point-and-shoot cameras dipped 17% in volume and 18% in revenue in 2011. Sales of individual pocket camcorders slipped by 13%, with a 10% contraction in revenue.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
