By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  23, November 2011

Strategy Analytics’ research finds that smartphone shipments to China at the end of Q3, 2011 was nearly 24M, while U.S was at 23M; hence making China the No.1 smartphone market globally. This is the first time any county has overtaken the U.S in the smartphone market by volume.

On a Q-o-Q basis, the growth trajectories for both of China and U.S paint a diverse picture. While the smartphone market in China surged by up 58% q-o-q, shipments of smartphones in the U.S. contracted by 7% for the same period.

While U.S still retains its number one slot in terms of being the largest smartphone market by revenue, China has now outpaced the U.S with respect to volumes.

SA, goes on to highlight the reasons why China is now a bigger smartphone market

“China’s rapid growth has been driven by an increasing availability of smartphones in retail channels, aggressive subsidizing by operators of high-end models like the Apple iPhone, and an emerging wave of low-cost Android models from local Chinese brands such as ZTE. “

The number one smartphone in China was Nokia (28% share), while HTC was its counterpart for the U.S (24% share)

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
