Smartphones Propel Global Mobile Sales to Soar by 6% Y-O-Y: Gartner
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  16, November 2011

Gartner finds that smartphone sales surged by 42%, year-over-year during Q3, 2011. Thus, contributing significantly to the 5.6% growth in mobile sales (smart + non smartphones), for the same period. From Q3, 2010 to Q3, 2011; 440.5M mobile phones were sold, with 115M of them being smartphones.

Feature phone sales were up in almost all emerging markets. Russia and China contributed heavily for smartphone growth in the emerging economies.

Gartner adds,

“Strong smartphone growth in China and Russia helped increase overall volumes in the quarter, but demand for smartphones stalled in advanced markets such as Western Europe and the U.S. as many users waited for new flagship devices featuring new versions of the key operating systems. Slowdowns also occurred in Latin America and the Middle East and Africa.”

In the OEM category, Nokia maintained leadership position, despite losing share! Samsung rose to the No. 1 smartphone maker worldwide, for the fist time. Garner states that Samsung’s ‘sales to end users tripled year over year to reach 24 million’.

On the O.S marketshare front, Android cruised ahead of its cometitors powering 52.5% of all smartphones sold in Q3, 2011 globally.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
