By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  11, November 2011

Mobile analytics firm, Flurry, pegs the total app downloads on both iOS and Android platforms together at 25B by 2011E. That’s a 300% spike year over year. 5B app downloads is expected in Dec, 2011 alone, as holiday shoppers are expected to buy more smartphones and hence download more apps.

Flurry states

“For a while, the customer base for the iPhone and Androids were largely early adopters. Now, it’s become a much more global market, especially as the prices for both devices have come down.”

iOS users have 500K apps to choose from, while Android has 350K apps on their catalog of offerings.

More apps are expected to hit both these markets, across generes as “The app store model has truly become a lucrative business,”

The revenue both these app markets in the U.S alone would reach $2.5 Billion, showing a significant jump from $1 Billion in 2010.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
