Android No.1 Platform in the U.S; Captures a 40% Market Share This Quarter: comScore
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  5, August 2011

Android is the numero uno O.S in the U.S for the 3 month average period ending June 2011, says comScore. The platform has garnered a 40% share in the U.S, displaying a spike of 5.4 percentage points quarter over quarter, from March to June, 2011. comScore surveyed over 30K mobile subscribers in the U.S to compile the data points.

comScore’s MobiLens service measures Top5 platforms, Top5 OEMS’ and Mobile content usage in the U. S every quarter.

Apple and RIM were the 2nd and 3rd platforms in the U.S, with a 26.6% and 23.4% share respectively. While Apple showed a growth of 1.1 points, RIM’s share contracted by 3.7 points in just under a quarter.

On the OEM front, comScore pegs Samsung as the No.1 mobile maker. LG and Motorola took second and third spots. Apple came in fourth and RIM fifth, but it must be stated that comScore is measuring mobile generically here. Ergo, both feature and smartphones produced by these makers are plugged under the Top 5 OEM’s category. Since Apple makes only smartphones, an 8.9% share in the U.S is healthy considering there are 234M users over the age of 13 with mobile devices.

On the mobile content usage aspect, comScore finds text messaging, browsing and app downloads were the Top3 categories in the U.S this quarter.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
