Allot Communications, a carrier network management agent, in its latest Mobile Trend report finds that mobile data bandwidth continues on its growth trajectory clocking a 77% spike in H1, 2011. Video streaming too continued on its ascendancy with a 93% spike; it remains the largest app that consumes 39% of mobile bandwidth.

Leading the video streaming pack is YouTube, accounting for 22% of mobile bandwidth usage globally. As a percentage of global mobile streaming, YouTube is responsible for 52% of traffic.

Other data points of the report finds that Apple app store generates 84% of mobile app download traffic, with Android accounting for 13%. VoIP bandwidth is surging and displayed a 101% growth, with Skype being the VoIP market leader VoIP with 82% of mobile VoIP bandwidth. Twitter and Facebook’s mobile bandwidth traffic surged by 297% and 166%, respectively

From an operator perspective, a third of the mobile operators globally ‘have already implemented application-aware charging model’.

Rami Hadar, President and CEO of Allot Communications chimes in by stating

“OTT applications continue to shift the balance of power from the operators to the content and app providers.
This presents a real challenge for survival to which operators have already begun to respond. We are seeing operators taking the opportunity to evolve their service plans, away from ‘unlimited’ and towards application-aware models, in order to meet this challenge.”

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
