Smartphone Data Deluge Gains Momentum as Costs Plunge: Nielsen
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  18, June 2011

Nielsen finds there is no stopping the ‘mobile data tsunami’, as U.S average smartphone data consumption rises by 89% year on year. The cost for data has dropped by nearly half from 14c to 8c per MB. And no surprise this, this data surge is fuelled by app heavy smartphone O.S such as Android and iOS

Data consumption per month has ballooned from 230MB in Q1, 2010 to 435MB in Q1, 2011. Usage of data by power users has spiked at an even faster rate- The top 10% of smartphone (90th percentile) users are guzzling 109% more data today than in 2010, and the top 1% devoured 4.5GB worth of data in Q1, 2011 as opposed to 1.8GB in Q1, 2010, a surge by 155%!!!

Android users are the most data hungry amongst all the O.S beating out Apple iOS by 90MB per month. Data consumption by Windows 7 users have spike over 2x in just two quarters, as potentially there are more apps available now, says Nielsen

Cost per MB of data is trending down significantly, plunging from 14c per MB in Q1, 2010 to just 88c per MB in Q1, 2011.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
