3 Top UK Operators Announce a JV to Take Mobile Payments + Marketing Forward
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  17, June 2011

U.K based operators – O2, Vodafone & Everything Everywhere – are collaborating together via a joint venture (JV) to offer mobile marketing + payments services to UK based consumers. When approved by relevant authorities, the new service would present consumers benefits such as targeted offers and mobile wallet payments.

The service is likely to go live by the end of the year, pending approval and O2 believes that this could serve as a model for the rest of the world to follow.

On the Wallet services, O2 states

We believe the new business can deliver the services and technology needed to see faster adoption of the mobile wallet and related payment services. The wallet itself will enable customers to transfer their entire physical wallet onto their mobile device. And they’ll be able to purchase products or services online, or in-store through Near Field Communications (NFC). It’s about giving customers a great experience and bringing them new and innovative products that can make their lives easier.

They go onto state that retailers and advertisers could benefit through a richer, targeted mobile marketing campaigns, thus making it simple to connect consumers and businesses.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
