Google Enhances Mobile Search; Says Mobile Search Has Grown 500% in the Last Two Years
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  15, June 2011

Google unveiled a slew of new search features to enhance the mobile search experience. Users can look up nearby places with icons such as restaurants, coffee, bars added at the bottom of the search page. Search has also gotten a whole lot faster with the search query builder, and a map that displays your current location in reference to the nearby places.

Google states that mobile search has grown 5 fold over the last two years. They go onto observe the sometimes-inverse relationship between mobile search and desktop search. They claim that when desktop search traffic falls during weekend, mobile search traffic picks up significantly. They also note that web search traffic soars during office hours, while mobile search spikes during non-office hours, particularly lunch time and happy hour.

Here are a couple of videos by Google highlighting their new mobile search features.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
