VOIP App Viber is Awesome for Free International Calling on iPhones [Review]
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  7, May 2011

I test drove the Viber app today and must say that it impressed me right from the get go. Soon as I fired up the free downloaded app for the first time, it asked for my mobile number and sent me a code via sms, which I needed to key in to activate the app. The app then synced with my contacts and voila, I could now make free international calls to friends
with Viber app on their iPhones. Easy peasy!!

Rating: ★★★★

Here’s a video embed detailing how the app works!!

I used it via Wi-Fi, so it was absolutely free for me. You get charged your standard data rates via your mobile operator if you use the app over 3G or 4G.

The call quality was great, although sometimes the voice did break up. Viber even rated the quality of the voice on call – though it said my call quality was average, I could hear alrite!

The call did drop a couple of times in the 30 minute duration, but getting back on was easy as. I just had to hit the call button and was back on in no time!

Post call, it did leave me feeling good as I could now save my money on those mediocre calling cards for some of my international calls.

I do presume that there is absolutely NO catch in using this app frequently, going forward.

I’m sure going to be using this a lot more from here on and recommending all my mates with iPhones to get this app!

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
