By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  28, April 2011

Google’s Android Market is projected to have the most number of apps on its store in five months from now, provided all app stores maintain the current rate of the growth, states Distimo. The app analytics firm, Distimo in it latest report also highlights current free vs paid apps across all stores, and also provides a yearly snapshot of Apple’s app store for iPad.

According to Distimo, Apple’s app store for iPhone currently has the largest number of apps, but it’s the slowest to grow in relative terms in March. But in terms of absolute growth, it was second only to Google’s Android. Google is projected to lag slightly behind Apple in June ’11 and overtake it by Sep ’11, at the current pace at which apps get added onto each store.

The graph below indicates that Google offers higher number of free apps currently than Apple, although Apple leads Google in the total number of apps offered. The ratio of free vs paid is much higher on Android while the inverse is true for Apple. Google’s Android Market currently offers 134,342 free applications, while Apple’s App Store offers 121,845 free applications for its iPhone users.

Distimo also tracked the year over year performance of iPad apps. As on Mar ’11, The Apple App Store for iPad users has of a repository of 75,755 apps.

Distimo notes that app prices have fallen across app stores over time, but iPad apps have trended in the opposite direction and have become more expensive over time.

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
