Mobile Computing Growth Contributes to Global PC Market Contraction
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  14, April 2011

IDC states global PC shipments shrunk by 3.2% in Q1 2011, on a year-over-year basis. Although myriad factors are the reasons for the contraction, it appears the growth of mobile and tablet computing are chief contributors to the shrinkage.

IDC opines

“Good-enough computing’ has become a firm reality, exemplified first by Mini Notebooks and now Media Tablets. Macroeconomic forces can explain some of the ebb and flow of the PC business, but the real question PC vendors have to think hard about is how to enable a compelling user experience that can justify spending on the added horsepower.”

An average user would prefer portability, ease of use and browsing capabilities on the go to additional power offered by PCs. Smartphones and Tablets more than satisfy these needs currently, and are simultaneously adding power too with new releases.

The tectonic shift from PC usage to mobile + tablet usage has already begun as these new Post-PC devices are being viewed not just as substitutes to PCs, but as primary computing devices. Going forward, it surely will not be of any surprise if the PC market continues to shrink while mobile surges!

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
