Mobile Tech Should Aim to Connect Rural Masses in India
By: Prashanth Shantharam  |  31, March 2011

Indian President, APJ Abdul Kalam called on the WWW community to help connect the rural masses of India to the rest of the globe via 3G and 4G technologies. Over the years, rural India has seen a significant spike in mobile device consumption and he says that this rising market(s) could be reached out in their mother tongue.

Here are sound bites from Abdul Kalam’s keynote at the 20th International World Wide Web conference, being held at Hyderabad for the first time.

“The WWW community should now focus on developing technologies that can provide useful information to the masses on mobile platform using the latest 3G and 4G technologies.

The world community is looking for a mobile device that can provide integrated solutions of 3G or 4G applications to people in their mother tongues.

The emergence of 3G and 4G technologies will provide a perfect opportunity to link up demand for bandwidth coming from villagers and the supply coming from 3G and 4G technologists.

This means a fisherman in the sea, will be in a position to get advance information about the sea wave condition, and location of abundant fish reserves. For a farmer, this means prices of agriculture produce at various markets in the nation and also the demand.”

"Mobile is fundamentally reshaping how we as consumers spend from housing and healthcare to entertainment and travel, from food and drinks to communication and transportation. Mobile not only influences purchase behavior but also post purchase opinions. When the share button is literally a second away, consumers are willingly sharing more information than ever before. Mobile is thus helping close the nirvana gap for brands and advertisers who seek to connect advertising to actual transactions. The long-term battle is however for owning the context of the users. Having the best knowledge about the user to help drive the transaction is the simply the most valuable currency of commerce.” -- Chetan Sharma State of Global Mobile Industry Report1H, 2011
