Android is the numero uno O.S in the U.S for the 3 month average period ending June 2011, says comScore. The platform has garnered a 40% share in the U.S, displaying a spike of 5.4 percentage points quarter over quarter, from March to June, 2011. comScore surveyed over 30K mobile subscribers in the U.S to compile the data points.

Canalys Pegs Android’s Global Market Share to be Almost 50%

Research firm, Canalys finds that Android has garnered nearly 50% of the global smartphone marketshare. The firm tracks phone markets in 56 countries and Android emerged as the numero uno O.S in 36 of those countries. Google recently claimed that 500,000 Android powered devices are activated daily.

Smartphone Sales Outpaces Feature-phones, for the First Time in the U.S: Nielsen

According to Nielsen’s stats, smartphone popularity is surging, with 55% of U.S phone buyers opting for smartphones over feature phones, in the last two months. That’s a 21 percentage point spike year on year. Android continued its dominance with a 38% share, with Apple and Blackberry following suit respectively.

Google Undrapes Wallet, it’s NFC Enabled Mobile Payment Solution

Google raised the curtains on its mobile payment product, and demoed the NFC driven ‘Wallet’, in its NYC offices today. Consumers can soon use their smartphones to tap and pay for their purchases at various retail outlets. Currently, the service is being rolled out on Sprint’s Nexus One at SFO and NY as test markets. Support for other phones & cities is expected soon.

AdMob Unveils New Tablet Ad Formats

Google announced new ad formats particularly targeted for tablet advertising, enabling advertisers and publishers to serve cross platform (iOS + Android) banner and HTML5 based full screen interstitial ads. They also revealed how their ad network AdMob is performing since its acquisition almost a year ago.

Tablet Penetration Nearly 5% in the U.S but Growth Potential Huge: Nielsen

Despite the hype on tablets recently, penetration levels in the U.S as of Q1, 2011 stands at just 4.8%, according to research firm Nielsen. Of the 12,000 sample surveyed, only 4.8% owned tablets while smartphones (36%), media players (13%), e-readers (9%), and netbooks (8%) had higher reach than tablets.

Android Powers Nearly 35% of Smartphones in the U.S: comScore

comScore’s MobiLens quarterly data is out and Android nabs the No.1 slot in the U.S with a market share of 34.7% for March 2011. Android showed a 6-percentage point growth q-o-q, eating away shares from RIM, Microsoft and Palm. Apple inched closer to the 2nd spot, currently held by RIM (27.1%) with a q-o-q growth of 0.5 points, clocking a share of 25.5%.

Cumulative App Store Revenues to Soar by 78% in 2011; Apple to Garner ¾ Share: IHS iSuppli

IHS iSuppli, released a report today that pegs the combined revenues of the four major app stores (run by Apple, Google, RIM & Nokia) to USD 3.8 Billion for 2011. Collective revenues of these app stores in 2010 stood at $2.8B, which is a 77.7% increase y-o-y. Apple is projected to claim a ‘ gargantuan 76% of the total app market revenue”, according to iSuppli.

Ceteris Paribus, Google to Have the Largest App Market by Sep ’11: Distimo

Google’s Android Market is projected to have the most number of apps on its store in five months from now, provided all app stores maintain the current rate of the growth, states Distimo. The app analytics firm, Distimo in it latest report also highlights current free vs paid apps across all stores, and also provides a yearly snapshot of Apple’s app store for iPad.
